Xin nian hao!

This week in Chinese class we sang a happy new year song to celebrate Chinese new year, and we danced with red handkerchiefs. It looked beautiful with all the handkerchiefs waving!

This is our new Chinese teaching assistant, Yu Laoshi

And here is the song!

More maths investigations...

In addition to making bar graphs to find out the popular things in Rm 21, we also went out and had a look at the staff carpark. We were curious about which colour car was the most common.

We tallied our results and showed them on a pie chart.

Turns out it was silver!

Scenes from the week

Here are a few of the other things we have been getting up to!

Playing a maths game, "Cross 12"

Playing a maths game, "Cross 12"

Publishing jokes at reading time

Using Scrabble tiles to make our spelling words

Making a book review using the iPad

In inquiry learning, we have been learning to classify things into different groups. We started with our own tote trays...

More classifying!

Watermelon and Sunflowers!

This week we have been writing poems about summery things. We have been looking closely, touching, and even tasting things as we think of the right describing words to use. Here are some photos of us in action and some of our poems.

Sunflower - by Noah

Bright yellow petals,
A dark coloured centre,
Leaves are very rough,
A prickly stem,
I wonder which one will grow tallest?

Sunflower - by Sophie

Lovely yellow petals,
Brown attractive centre, busy with bees,
Love-heart shaped leaves,
Green, spiky stem,
I love sunflowers!

What's happening in Maths?

We have been learning about different ways to collect, record and present information. We've been learning about how to make tally charts and graphs, and we chose our own question to investigate. We had to survey the whole class!

We presented our results on a bar graph...

And we looked at each other's graphs to see what we could learn, e.g.

"Kelan's graph shows me that soccer and swimming are the most popular sports in Rm 21. It also tells me that cricket is the least popular in Rm 21. I am really surprised that handball isn't that popular!" (Isabel A)

"Sophie's graph shows me that tigers are the most popular animals and fish are the least popular." (Fin)

The completed graphs and comments will be displayed in the classroom next week so please come by and have a look.
